A Bear in My Bed & a Jackal in My Oven
by: Lourie, Avinoam & Shapiro, Cissy Naomi
How many can say they've had a Syrian bear in their bed? Warmed a jackal
in their oven? Been gored by a jealous roe deer? Attacked by a tiger?
Had monkeys swing from their chandelier? Or lost a snake on a plane? Avinoam
Lourie has. Here are heartwarming, entertaining and educational experiences
of Israeli zoologist, Avinoam Lourie, told with the typical warmth, wit,
and wisdom for which he is known. Also recipient, Israeli Presidential
Medal of Honor; selected one of "Top 100 Important People" in
Haifa; helped bring back several endangered species to Israel. From the
author, "People who knew my stories kept telling me that I should
really write them down, and someone came along who finally made me do
it! I really enjoyed revisiting and retelling some of the crazy experiences
I've had with animals. From the time I was a child, I brought all sorts
of creatures home. My first job (when I was 12) was to provide poisonous
snakes and scorpions to a professor at the university who used them to
make anti-venom. When I grew up, I started as an ichthyologist studying
fish that migrated through the Suez Canal from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean.
As head of the Haifa Zoo and then as conservation warden, I did things
like experiment with leeches to see how it would feel when they were attached;
did a scorpion demo where I got stung; put a nearly-frozen baby jackal
in my oven to warm it up and didn't have a chance to tell my wife about
it; had to confiscate three baby tigers and keep them in my home for a
while; ditto for a Striped Hyena, monkey, snakes, and many other creatures.
A crazy, wonderful life with nature." 151 pgs

Beautiful Jim Key: The Lost History of a Horse and a Man Who Changed
the World
by: Rivas, Mim Eichler
Masterfully told, poignant, and rich with spellbinding historical detail,
this is the remarkable, true story of an extraordinary horse and his pioneering
trainer who symbolized America at the dawn of the 20th century. For close
to a century, a majestic chapter of American history has been buried in
an obscure grave in Shelbyville, Tennessee. BEAUTIFUL JIM KEY, the onetime
ugly duckling of a scrub colt that became one of the most heralded and
beloved heroes of his day, was famous neither for his beauty nor his speed
but instead for his exceptional intelligence. Said to have an I.Q. equivalent
to that of a human sixth-grader, Jim exploded on to the national scene
in 1897 by demonstrating inexplicable abilities to read, write, spell,
do mathematics, tell time, sort mail, cite biblical passages, and debate
politics. For the next nine years, Jim performed in nationwide expositions
and world's fairs to wildly receptive crowds, smashing box-office records,
overcoming hurdles of prejudice and skepticism, all the while winning
rapturous praise from the press and leaders such as President McKinley,
Booker T. Washington, and Alice Roosevelt Longworth. In this breathtaking
saga, Jim's astonishing journey is coupled with that of his trainer and
best friend, Dr. William Key, a self-taught veterinarian, former slave,
Civil War veteran, prominent African-American entrepreneur, and one of
the most renowned horse whisperers of his time -- a man who shunned all
force in the training of horses, instead relying on kindness and patience.

Buffalo Bill & His Wild West: A Pictorial Biography
by: Rosa, Joseph G. & May, Robin
Who more than Buffalo Bill symbolizes the American West? William Frederick
Cody (1846-1917) personified, packaged, and perpetuated the myth of the
Wild West. This lively biography documents fully the events of his extraordinary
career as a buffalo hunter, army scout, freighter, and guide on the Great
Plains, and as a showman on two continents. More than 150 fully captioned
historic photographs--many never before published--depict Buffalo Bill
from his childhood days to his reign as a superlative actor and producer
whose Wild West remains unique in the annals of show business. This volume
preserves the color and spectacle of a bygone era--and, best of all, shows
that that the real and heroic figure rivals the invented and legendary

Camel Lot: The True Story of a Zoo-Illogical Farm
by: Schaffer, Moselle
A tender and amusing book about animals that will appeal to anyone who
loved James Herriot's All Things Great and Small. It is the true story
of Moselle Schaffer and her zoo-illogical farm in Indiana. The author
led a conventional life in Indianapolis until she obtained a pilot's license
and moved with her husband to a nearby farm with an airstrip. At the suggestion
of a circus-performer friend, the couple began to raise exotic animals
in the empty barns, beginning with camels and zebras. Other beasts came
later--tiger cubs, llamas, miniature goats, monkeys, a pig. The author
acted as obstetrician to an ostrich chick named Watts (the egg had been
incubated under a 100-watt light bulb) and found a Leghorn hen to act
as its foster mother. The menagerie survived, but the marriage did not.
Schaffer now runs Camel Lot as a bed-and-breakfast. A witty and entertaining
book. 274 pgs.
