100 Birds & How They Got Their Names
by: Wells, Diana
In 1758 Linnaeus began sorting the names of plants, animals and birds and we have been using his system every since. All scientific names are Latinized, even if their origins are Greek or from the names of places or people. Linnaeus's new system gave each creature, and plant, two names, that of its genus (or kind) and that of its species (or individual characteristic). He grouped genera into families and families into orders. An order (or group of families) always has a name ending in the suffix "-iformes", and a family name always ends with the suffix "-idae". The name of the genus is a noun (capitalized), followed by the name of the species, an adjective (not capitalized). Birds are also grouped into subfamilies, tribes and qualifying specific names. The author not only explains how the bird got it name, but also mentions the different ways we use their names. For example, when we 'hoodwink' a person, we are using a term to describe sealing the eyes of a hunting bird to keep it docile. A very interesting book with illustrations of each bird. Each bird is talked about in its own chapter. 297 pages.

As with any quality field guide, this volume is replete with excellent illustrations, detailed descriptions, observation hints, and range maps, but you will never look at our feathered friends in quite the same way after you encounter these hilarious birds. While there are many excellent field guides on the market, none include these species. Only the Sills' guide hovers over the forefront of ornithological discovery. It identifies thirty new species, each illustrated in detail with brilliant watercolors by noted nature artist John Sill. A Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica
by: Stiles, F Gary & Skutch, Alexander F

Costa Rica, a country of no larger than West Virginia, hosts more than 830 species of birds, more than in all of North Amerian north of Mexico. This lavishly illustrated book, with its full coverage of waterbirds and migrants as well as resident tropical species, and its coverage of such topics as plumages, vocalizations, food habits, nesting, and distribution, is truly a guide to the birds themselves, not merely a guide to their identification. The authors discuss some aspects of evolution, ecology, and behavior of Costa Rican birds, and report on the costly and courageous conservation efforts the country is making in face of discouraging odds. The family and species accounts that follow, covering some 400 pages, make up the bulk of the book, with 52 magnificent color plates illustrating virtually ever species of Costa Rican bird, migrants as well as residents. There are also practical tips for trips in the field and descriptions of good birding locations, with specific directions for travel by car, public transport, and on foot, as well as three maps. 511 pgs.
